Many have asked the question, “What is my life’s purpose? Why am I here?” Have you ever had the feeling that you are not living your life’s purpose? Or, on the contrary, do you believe that you are living life in accordance with your destiny? It is the belief of the Yoruba that we choose, before coming from heaven to earth, the type of life we will live…our destiny.

Each one of us here on earth is a spirit, transitioned into a physical form. Birth is not the start of life but instead, a continuation of the life we started in heaven. Before coming to earth, each one of us went before Olodumare (God Almighty) to receive his blessings for what we plan to achieve during our lifetime on earth. After receiving his blessings we then make preparation for our journey.

When we leave heaven we are very clear about what we intend to achieve. As we travel through the birth canal, however, the memory of our plans leaves many of us.  As a result, we don’t fully remember the purpose of our journey…our destiny. Some of us are fortunate and do remember. Some of us know that we are here for a specific purpose but are not quite sure what it is and how to get there. Others have no recollection whatsoever. It is Orí (our head and personal guide) that we rely on for successful navigation of our path to destiny. For success to occur, we must be in alignment with Orí. Being in alignment keeps us on course.
